For more than three decades, North County Philanthropy Council has hosted a Volunteer Awards Luncheon recognizing volunteers from local organizations. This year, one of our wonderful volunteers Perry Nam was honored with the “Volunteer of the Year” award during their virtual ceremony.

Perry has been a lifeline for Albert Guerrero, who has dementia, and his wife Teri Enos-Guerrero, who cares for him. He first met the couple through the free ALZ Companion program. Perry spends time with Albert – first in person, now using Zoom – to provide vital socialization, and so Teri can take a break. Read about their beautiful story here. What started as a volunteer position has blossomed into a deep friendship. Albert and Teri were proud to cheer Perry on, virtually, as he received this award.

“I am deeply humbled to receive the NCPC award. While watching the broadcast with Albert, Teri, Lucas the dog, their two cats, and my friends from Alzheimer’s San Diego, I was grateful that we had a chance to reconnect, especially at the tail end of a lonely shelter-at-home year,” Perry shares. “Hearing the amazing (and adorable too: one lady has been fostering puppies for years!) work that others are doing has taught me the importance of staying active and looking out for my fellow San Diegans. I’ve realized that their presence yesterday, and their companionship throughout the year has been the greatest gift of all. As we head into Thanksgiving week, that’s what I’m feeling thankful for.”
