The ALZ Companions Respite program is one of the most essential services we offer at Alzheimer’s San Diego. We match volunteers with families and they take on the responsibility of visiting those living with dementia and not only connecting with them, but at the same time providing respite for the caregiver of the person. Learn more about the program, the eligibility requirements, and quotes from families participating in the program.
What do ALZ Companions provide?
When volunteers are matched with families, they then make weekly visits to spend time with the person living with memory loss. Many times meaningful connections are formed, and the visits take whatever shape the two like. No matter what stage of the disease someone is in, our volunteers are trained to engage properly with anyone.
During these visits, caregivers have time to themselves and can relax or run some errands. For many caregivers, they are family members with no prior caregiving experience and don’t know anyone else in their shoes, so during their break they can also take advantage of our virtual and in-person support groups, education classes, and more services that can help them on a daily basis.
It’s important to note that our volunteers do not provide assistance with activities of daily living like dressing, toileting, etc. View the full eligibility criteria here.
