We were lucky enough to get a Q&A session with one of the founders of Rides4ALZ, SDG&E President Scott Drury. His passion for Alzheimer’s advocacy began 7 years ago, when his mother was diagnosed. Check out Scott’s answers below, and click here to learn more about Rides4ALZ.

Q: How did you get involved with Alzheimer’s San Diego?

A: A former colleague of mine, Bob Schlax, was on the Board of Directors. He exposed me to the outstanding work of the organization. I was fortunate enough to succeed Bob when he retired from SDG&E. The cause has special meaning to me, as my mom has Alzheimer’s.

Q: What have you learned as a current caregiver?

A: My wife Candi is the primary caregiver, which is an enormous responsibility. We’ve learned that every day is different. So we try to cherish the good days and live in the moment.

Q: Where did you get the idea for SD Rides4ALZ?

A: Besides supporting all things Alzheimer’s, my other passion is motorcycling.  One day I thought it would be great to combine the two things. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find someone whose family hasn’t been touched by the disease. The motorcycle community is such a generous community. Our first annual ride was a great success!

Q: Is Rides open to non-motorcyclists?

A: Definitely. Join us at the after party at AleSmith Brewing Company in Miramar. There will be great food, drinks and entertainment.

Q: What do you want other supporters to know?

A: If you have an idea and want to make a difference – don’t hesitate to reach out to Alzheimer’s San Diego. They took my vision of a county-wide motorcycle ride and ran with it. Last year was our first time doing this, and we raised more than $75,000. This year, we expect to raise more than $100,000! I’m so proud that every dollar stays in San Diego County. It’s all about neighbors helping neighbors, and investing in a healthy and happy community.
