For Walk4ALZ team captain Nancy Mora, our mission is very personal. Her husband, Enrique, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in March 2010, when their kids were just 11 and 13 years old.

“He has hit plateaus over the years, but most recently has seen a steady decline. He can no longer work or drive,” says Nancy. “He is no longer the husband or father he once was.”

Alzheimer’s has affected the Mora family by taking away the person they loved dearly. The Moras have stepped up in their new roles of caregivers, they have been able to stay strong because of the love they share for each other. When looking for more help, Nancy found the guidance she was longing for.

“The last few years I’ve reached out to Alzheimer’s San Diego for emotional support as well as education classes. The staff has been so compassionate and caring. I realized I couldn’t continue being a caregiver without support,” says Nancy. “Rebecca De Campos has been an amazing contact for finding just the right support group for me, and the education classes have been invaluable.”

With the additional help, Nancy’s family found help for Enrique while receiving their own support. Having the tools of education have given her relief and been a true benefit. Finding hope and continuing to support Enrique, the family finds the courage to fight to help others.

“It’s so important to work with Alzheimer’s San Diego to help raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. The Walk4ALZ inspires me to continue the fight. The walk brings a voice to the disease and gives us an opportunity to meet other families who are suffering the same and I take comfort in that, says Nancy. “Not that they are suffering, but to see that there are people, in person, blogs, and support groups, that truly understand what we are going through and can give emotional support.”

Having the support of the community gives this family and many others hope. It bring together so many people for a cause in an amazing way. Being able to support each other in a time of need is what we all share.

“This will be the third Walk4Alz that I’ve participated in with my team, Hope Heals. I am blessed to be surrounded by family and friends who love and support me and my family as we live with this horrible disease,” Nancy explains. “Seeing so many people coming together all for the same cause gives me hope. Hope in that there are people and agencies out there to support us and our suffering loved ones, and hope that we may find a cure soon.”

“There are too many people living with this disease,” she adds, “so the walk brings light and a voice.”
