You’re probably looking at this photo of our Education & Outreach Manager Amy Abrams and wondering … What on earth is she doing?!

It turns out rubber ducks have a useful place in dementia education.

Alzheimer’s San Diego has created monthly Skills Clinics, inspired by the Positive Approach™ to Care. (You can learn more about the Positive Approach™ here.) Each Skills Clinic focuses on a specific challenge – from bathing and grooming, mealtime, preventing falls, daily activity planning and more.

In these interactive workshops, family caregivers get a dose of professional education. Not only do they learn best practices, they also role play to experience what it’s like to be on the receiving end of caregiving.

“This role-reversal allows caregivers to see how it feels…for instance, it’s not really fun when someone suddenly comes at you with a toothbrush,” Amy explains. “In every Skills Clinic, it’s incredible to see how the light bulbs keep going off. Family caregivers realize that by changing their approach, they can improve the quality of life for their loved one – and themselves.”

These Skills Clinics are the only local program of their kind bringing professional education to family caregivers. Check out our education calendar to see upcoming topics and dates.
