Meet Amber Conrad, our Major Gifts Manager!

Life Before Alzheimer’s San Diego

“I have long been an advocate of this organization and have always admired everything about the work we do… Being a part of this team feels like an ode to [my grandmother’s] memory, and I am honored to be here.”

Although Amber Conrad joined the organization just earlier this year, memory loss is a cause that hits home for her. Originally from Huntington Beach, she first came here to attend college back in 2011. In regards to the city itself, she says “…there is SO much to do in San Diego – it’s impossible to be bored when there are street fairs, festivals, concerts, vintage markets and food fests available practically every weekend!”

While her educational background in communications helped hone her skills, striking up a conversation with just about anyone comes naturally – “you might say I have the ‘gift of gab.’” She adds that shyness has never been an issue, which manifests as a perfect trait for connecting with donors and other community members.

Connecting with the Community

Amber has worked with older adults for years in assisted living, memory care and hospice – meaning she has witnessed dementia progression first-hand and what it means to the person and their families. As our Major Gifts Manager, she works closely with our community and helps bring in funds to keep programs and services free of charge for San Diegans. This also includes leading the annual Visionary Luncheon & Auction every May. She ensures people stay connected to the organization and are aware of how their generosity is making an impact for families in need around the county. Amber’s previous role also involved connecting with donors and general fundraising matters, so she credits that and other experiences for allowing a seamless transition.

Something she has noticed while connecting with families is how Alzheimer’s San Diego is seen as a “safe space in the midst of uncertainty… an emotional outlet; a space to take a deep breath and be vulnerable.” And that space may be different for each person, whether it’s a social activity, a phone call, an event, or any other program. Amber also appreciates how every employee has some type of personal connection to the cause and notes that organizations run best when everyone has eyes on the same goal – which for us means supporting people through their dementia journey.

Amber Conrad & Her Perspective

Dementia has always been a part of Amber’s family, including her grandmother Marlene, who lived with the disease for five years before passing in 2015.

“I called her ‘My Sunshine,’ and it was devastating to watch her bright light become dim. Her journey inspired me to begin my career in geriatrics. I always say, I wish I knew back then what I am so grateful to know now.”

These reasons are why she is so proud to be on the team and help families in need. She shares how the impact is visible when speaking to people that frequent our programs, for example a care partner who continued to bring her spouse to social activities even though it was difficult for them to leave the house. The care partner explained how even though at times her spouse would forget about the activity shortly after it happened, the smiles and joy in the moment were worth everything to her. Amber encourages people to reach out for help even if you don’t know where to start or what to ask, we’re here to walk alongside you.
