Recap: Visionary Women Luncheon & Auction

May 12, 2017 | Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia aren’t easy to talk about, and are often misunderstood. But nearly 230 friends and supporters helped fight that stigma at the inaugural Visionary Women Luncheon & Auction at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa on May 12. More than $200,000 was raised to support local families and research for a cure! And thanks to Darlene Shiley’s generous match campaign, those dollars will go twice as far.

There was some fierce (but friendly) competition during the silent and live auctions. A 5-day, 4-night luxury stay in Montana and two VIP behind-the-scenes passes to FOX’s Emmy-winning TV show So You Think You Can Dance created a bidding war in the live auction. In the silent auction, a long weekend in Palm Springs and a package featuring the best of La Jolla were among our top bid-getters.

Mary Murphy, ballroom dancing champion and judge on FOX’s So You Think You Can Dance, delivered a powerful speech at the luncheon. As she recounted her mother’s diagnosis at only 59 years old, and death 10 years later, it was clear the pain of this disease is universal. Mary’s honest and gripping story shined light on an issue that is too often ignored, and reminded everyone present how much work still needs to be done.

Thank you to everyone who bought a ticket or table and donated. We couldn’t serve the community without your continued support. Be sure to check out photos from the event above!
